Carbon Abatement
Would you like to reduce your greenhouse footprint and help support the work of the SMRC at the same time?
The SMRC is a provider of verified Greenhouse Friendly™ abatement credits, commonly known as "carbon credits," which can be purchased by people and organisations wishing to offset their own greenhouse gas emissions.
How is this done?
The SMRC's Waste Composting Facility (WCF) is a verified Australian Government Department of Climate Change Greenhouse Friendly™ abatement project. When you purchase an abatement credit from the SMRC you can be assured the abatement has been verified by independent auditors and the Federal Department of Climate Change. The waste composting facility diverts from landfill the household rubbish of more than 350,000 residents of Perth's southern metropolitan suburbs. When the disposal of organic matter to landfill is avoided by composting, methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, emissions are abated. It is the net difference in emissions between landfilling and composting that gives the SMRC its carbon abatement.
Both Choice Magazine and Carbon Offset Watch, a partnership of Total Environment Centre Inc., the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology Sydney and Choice, have rated the SMRC's carbon offsets as 'Outstanding'. How to offset your greenhouse gas emissions
This is an easy process and begins with determining your current greenhouse gas footprint. You will be asked to input information on your electricity, gas, waste and vehicle usage into the calculator. With this information the calculator will make a basic estimation of your greenhouse gas footprint. Please click on the link below to calculate your annual greenhouse gas footprint:

The calculation above is measured in Kilograms. A SMRC carbon credit is equal to a tonne of carbon dioxide equivalents (TCO2-e) not entering the atmosphere. To work out your annual greenhouse emissions per tonne divide the number in the greenhouse footprint calculator by 1000.
Before purchasing carbon offsets it is best to take what steps you can to reduce your greenhouse footprint. The SMRC's Climate Wise team has a number of strategies to help you reduce your greenhouse emission at both work and home. After taking what steps you can to reduce your greenhouse footprint, for your remaining greenhouse gas emissions you can purchase an equal amount of greenhouse gas abatement from the SMRC and offset your emissions.The sale of SMRC carbon offsets help to fund projects like the Regional Resource Recovery Centre and Climate Wise.
The current SMRC carbon offset price is $10.00 (Ex GST) per tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (TCO2-e).
