Since 2002, the SMRC's member Councils have participated in Climate Wise, the Regional Community Greenhouse Gas Abatement Project, as part of their commitment to the Cities for Climate Protection Programme. The programme focuses on working with local residents to become more energy efficient in order to reduce energy usage across the region and work towards building sustainable communities.
Residents of participating councils can respond to climate change by taking part in Climate Wise, which promotes sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction in homes, schools and local businesses.
Through the RRRC and Climate Wise, the SMRC has prevented a total of 148,591 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (TCO2-e) from entering the atmosphere, for the period July 2007 to May 2008.
This is equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 42,000 cars.
Of the total amount, 61,210 TCO2-e was abated from the Greenhouse Friendly™ Approved Waste Composting Facility.
