Projects : Regional Resource Recovery Project
The Regional Resource Recovery Cycle
Click here to see the Regional Resource Recovery Cycle in action.
The Regional Resource Recovery Cycle (or strategy) has three key components: collection, processing and re-use.
Collection
Residents of Canning, Melville, Cockburn, Rockingham, Fremantle and East Fremantle have the same two-bin collection system. All household waste, once collected, is taken to the RRRC for recovery and processing which, as well as having huge environmental benefits, also results in substantial increases in recovered resources available for community re-use.
The integrated collection system provides each household with a comprehensive disposal service comprising:
- Weekly collection of a 240 litre mobile bin for the disposal of general household waste including food and small green waste,
- Fortnightly collection of a 240 litre mobile bin for the disposal of co-mingled dry recyclables,
- Three verge-side collections each year of large green waste items such as tree prunings and branches, and,
- An annual bulk waste collection.
So what goes where?
Green Bins
The Green bin is emptied weekly. This bin is for all kitchen waste, general household waste and small garden waste such as lawn clippings and small prunings.
Under the Regional Resource Recovery strategy, not only will dry materials such as glass, paper, metals and plastics be recycled, but organic household waste will also be recovered as a valuable resource in the form of a high quality compost, suitable for use in agriculture.
In order to avoid contamination of the compost, it is important that the following items are not placed in the green bin:
Yellow top bin
The yellow-topped bin is a commingled recyling bin which means that ALL dry recyclables can simply be placed, loose, into the same bin, making it easy to recycle more. The yellow-topped bin is emptied fortnightly on the same day as the green bin.
The following items should be put into the yellow-topped bin:
- Glass bottles, jars and containers
- All plastic containers: This includes all cool drink, juice, milk bottles, and plastic containers
- Aluminium cans and foil (all aluminium cans, foil and trays)
- Steel cans (Food and pet food containers and empty paint cans)
- Aerosol cans (These are fully recyclable and DO NOT present a hazard during collection and sorting)
- Liquid paperboard (Fruit juice and dairy cartons and long-life product pakaging)
- Paper and cardboard (all newspapers, all thicknesses of cardboard, cereal boxes, office paper and glossy magazines
Green Waste and bulk verge collections
Garden waste that is too large for disposal in the green bin, and other bulky household items, are collected from the verge on a regular basis. If you live in the project catchment area, please contact your local council for detailed information on this service.

Processing and Re Use
The facilities at the RRRC receive material from households to process and recover it for re-use.
The Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) separates materials for reprocessing by various industries.
The In-Vessel Composting Facility
turns general household waste into compost for agricultural use.
The Green Waste Processing Facility turns green waste into mulch and soil conditioners for parks and road verges.
